BENEO’s Palatinose™ supports German cyclist athlete during tough endurance challenges

Stefan Schlegel, an ambitious 39-year-old health coach and personal trainer from the Heidelberg region in Germany, participated for the third time in one of the hardest cycling races, the Race Across America (RAAM 2016). The RAAM is an endurance bicycle race across the United States and one the toughest endurance sports events in the world.
He also competed in last year’s UltraMarathon Cycling Association’s 6-12-24 hours World Championships in Borrego Springs, California.
Stefan is using BENEO’s unique functional carbohydrate Palatinose™ in his daily training as well as in competitions. During his first participation in the RAAM he successfully completed the 4,800 km with more than 20 hours cycling a day. Stefan finished with a top 10 ranking in less than 12 days. In 2014 he completed the Race Across America in 10 days, 14 hours and 32 minutes, besting his 2012 finish by an impressive 15 hours and finished fifth (Solo Male Under 50).
The race extends from Oceanside CA (West Coast) all the way to Annapolis MD (East Coast) over a distance of approximately 4,800 km. Racers need to finish this distance within a time limit of 12 days, which means a minimum of 400 km per day, involving more than 20 hours cycling a day. The altitude climbing profile is more than three times that of Mount Everest . The drop-out rate is is around 50%.

Palatinose™ - an essential part of Stefan Schlegel's nutrition

BENEO's next generation carbohydrate Palatinose™ (isomaltulose) is an ideal carbohydrate for endurance sports, because it
-     is the only low glycaemic carbohydrate that is fully digestible
-     provides glucose over a longer period of time
-     helps to improve fat oxidation during physical activity
Stefan Schlegel says about Palatinose™:
"Palatinose™ is my 'nutrition peer'. It is added to every drink and several foodstuffs that I use during my training and while racing as it helps to keep my energy supply on a constant level."
Additionally, he is convinced of the scientifically certified dental benefits of the functional carbohydrate: "I will amost continuously drink more than 20 litres a day during the race. Any cariogenic substances are a disadvantage."
