FAQ

FAQ about the BENEO Label

Do the food products with the BENEO™ label have a special taste?

Inulin has a completely neutral taste, while oligofructose, has a mild sweet taste. Once they are added to a food product they will not negatively affect the taste of the end product.

What is the caloric value of food products carrying the BENEO™ label?
The caloric value of inulin and oligofructose is reduced compared to available carbohydrates. Compared with them the caloric value of these ingredients is about one third based on the scientific data, compared with fat, one sixth. They are quite often used as replacements for fat and carbohydrates, which means they are suitable for reduced calorie products.

How many food products carrying the BENEO™ label can I eat per day?
Everyone can eat as much of it as he/she likes. The intake recommendation for dietary fibers in total is about 25-30g per day. In many countries actual intake is below this recommendation. High intake of fibers might be perceived by an increase in flatulence in sensitive people. However, the amount of inulin and oligofructose in the products carrying the BENEO™label is by far not that high.

What does inulin and oligofructose look like before it is used in food products?
Pure inulin and oligofructose are mostly used in two different forms in food products: a white powder or as a clear solution in water.

Is the inulin some kind of medicine?
Not at all. The positive effects that inulin creates in your body will be beneficial to your health. However, they are not intended to use as a remedy against acute illnesses and are therefore best found in your daily food.

What is the difference between products with the BENEO™ label and other food products that are good for the intestines?
Some drinks contain live, good bacteria that can be drunk in this form (= probiotics) and favourably influence the good flora. Products with the BENEO™ label support the growth of the good flora that already exists in your body, so supports your own individual flora already present in our intestine (= prebiotics).

May I eat inulin and oligofructose daily or is this even recommended if I want to have the benefit?

Yes, inulin and oligofructose can be eaten and should be eaten daily, as they constitute an important and unique source of nutrients for the good bacteria. If the intake of inulin and oligofructose decreases, the “feed” for those good bacteria is decreasing and thus, the good bacteria are decreasing as well. A regular presence of inulin/oligofructose is best for those good bacteria.

Can children and babies benefit from healthy food products with the BENEO™ label?

Yes, these products have a number of positive effects in our body. These effects are beneficial to all healthy people, regardless of age.

Are food products with the BENEO™ label suitable for diabetics?
Inulin and oligofructose belong to the non-digestible dietary fibres. They cannot be digested in the small intestine and therefore do not increase the amount of glucose in the blood. Naturally diabetics must take into account the available carbohydrates that might be present in healthy food products carrying the BENEO™ label.
